Easter and Coin

I read a lot of house and design blogs and I usually get bored by the overly-enthusiastic attitudes of the writers toward such mundane ho-hum things like table settings. Sometimes I can picture bloggers foaming at the mouth over the hammered edge of a plate or the hand silk-screened paisley of a tablecloth pattern. So I apologize in advance if my Easter table photos are resonating in your brain like, "why does she think we're interested in this?"

So anyway, I present to you our Easter table...

The table cloth I purchased in Florence at Coin. Don't click on that link because you will surely regret it as you realize how awesome and how far away this department store is. And it looks like they have an online store but they don't sell any of the good stuff there.

Gah, sorry, but here is a small collection of the good stuff from Coin. How about that hexagon pillow?

Probably the only helpful advice I can provide at the moment...

We took down our tree today.
Once we decided - we just did it, kind of like peeling off a band-aid real fast.

Save all those clementine boxes and store your ornaments!

Bonus: Sorting by color gets out a lot of my pent-up organization aggression. I'm a dork.

Coming up this week: I finished a dramatic paint project this week that I can't wait to share! Stay tuned...

Happy New Years + Random pics

Wishing you and your families and friends all the best in this coming year!

Our evening will be spent home, in pajamas with a couple bottles of bubbly and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

Thought I'd wrap up this week with some random happenings...

Aren't these ornaments precious? They were John's great-grandmother's and a gift to us from Aunt Cook.
I have a few old ornaments from my grandmother too. So I am looking forward to displaying everything together in some glass colanders next year.

I should have posted this photo a few days ago but laziness prevented me:
That's the snow drift Monday morning. up to the top step of our stoop. 1 and a half hours later, we dug ourselves out and returned to hibernation.

Oh Christmas Tree...

We were the only ones in the tree lot yesterday due to the rainy weather. But we were able to bring home our first real Christmas tree. When we lived in apartments, I was lucky to get up my tinsel tree every year. Last year was a doozy since we moved into the house a few days before Christmas.

But by last night we put it all together with the help of John's family...

And this morning...

Here are a few of my favorite ornaments...
I have to hand it to John for being patient with my color choices. I originally had hot pink in the mix, but nixed it in favor of silver, gold, mustard yellow, turquoise and purple. But it does look pretty and I promised him we would get a better topper at some point. (Right now the place-holder is the glitter gold bow and ribbon).

Long weekend

We had a super busy last few days: Kicked off the weekend with a mani-pedi, then a late night airport pickup, Yankees game bachelor party, our new iPad (!), lunch with the family, dinner with friends followed by an intense Dance Revolution competition, found out our good friends are having a baby (!), mowed our lawn for the first time, gave a few house tours, set up for and attended my niece's wedding (!), took a bazillion photos, spent half of Monday editing said photos and posting on Facebook, a long walk, an impromptu BBQ, and acquired a new-to-us air conditioner.

So since things are winding down a bit today, wanted to send all my belated well-wishes to anyone who might be reading this.
Our new lawn, coming quite nicely!

Our new flag, looking all spiffy, courtesy of Mom and Dad.

Also wanted to take a few moments to share some words my father wrote about his experiences growing up during WWII in the Bronx. This is his response to a recent article in the local paper. I hope he doesn't mind me reprinting it here! So you understand a little better, Dad had just turned 7 a few days before Pearl Harbor was attacked:

"We'd scour the neighborhood for metal, paper, glass, rubber and take it all to an empty lot a few blocks away. The stuff would pile pretty high and trucks would come and haul it off for the war effort.

Lots of our staples were rationed and each family had their ration allotment.

In school, we were given small identification discs on a cord worn around our necks. We also had buttons of different colors with different numbers which we'd pin on our clothing to identify where we lived (just in case). And we had to do frequent air raid drills in school. Our church (St. Dominic's) was to be used in case the school was damaged. We rehearsed going there (just in case).

My dad was an air raid warden and had to go out when the community had night drills - sirens, lights out, the works. He was a bricklayer and was often called upon to work for weeks at a time in the construction of army facilities and landing fields. Many others, including people in my family, worked tirelessly in the defense plants

My small block had twelve service personnel including one WAVE. Three died. One man next door was in battles in the Pacific Island raids throughout the entire war, always on the front. And fortunately, he never got a scratch. The candy store had a big cardboard display in the window with a photo of everyone in the neighborhood who was in the service. They'd paint a gold border around the guys that were killed.

Families displayed small cloths in a window facing the street - red border with a blue star for each serviceman in the family. They'd replace the blue star with a gold one if one of them was killed.

At the end of the war, many of the streets had block parties in celebration. But those which had people killed, respected the families and refrained from having the parties.

Please thank Kay for bringing back those great (and sometimes sad) memories when the nation was called upon and responded to war with incredible sacrifice. Very, very different from today when we fight a war and still insist on tax reductions."

Wise words, Dad.

Easter 2010

We had a great time yesterday, hosting our parents for our first Easter Sunday in our new home.

Today I'm back to work - painting the guest room navy blue! It's looking fabulous so far. Hope to post some more photos soon, but in the meantime, here's a look back at yesterday's Easter goodies...

Ornament storage

After being left with two empty clementine boxes that were just too bulky to add to the kitchen trash bag, I peeked around the house to see if I could use them for anything. I noticed we had a bunch of ornaments to put away until next Christmas - Epiphany!

And since they're stackable they fit nice and snug in my bigger Christmas storage bins.

A bonus is that both Clementines and Christmas ornaments only come around in December :)

Cozying up for the holidays

The last few days have been a whirlwind of unpacking and settling in. I can barely contain myself to hold it together until I get a paintbrush and roller in my hands!

Look at the frame over the fireplace! We bought it a few years ago for $20 at a thrift store that was closing in Jersey City. It fits perfectly above our fireplace! I could search high and low the rest of my life and probably never find such a perfect fit... I'm thinking about getting one of those antique glass mirrors made to fit in it. That would be sweet!

Also John is obsessed with finding the perfect pair of upholstered chairs to set on each side of the fireplace. A man after my own heart...

So much to do! In the meantime, we've added a few small touches to bring the holiday spirit inside...
