Hi Amy, John, you did the right thing with those 2 trees. I'm pretty sure the ornamental was (notice the past tense) a flowering pear, but as you correctly pointed out, the short flowering period is hardly worth it for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, this is true for many plants and trees. And the hemlock posed a danger to both your house and the one next door, plus it can be messy. A good source of plant info can be found on "backyardgardener.com". Check out the plant enclyclopedia. I'd love to help you redo the front yard and I was thinking of a Japanese maple. Let me know.
